Description
Most copal is cut from the bark. This one isn’t. Black copal is the resin a Bursera tree releases on its own, through wounds it seals itself over time, hardening in the open air into a dark, dense stone โ which is why it’s also called “stone copal.” Our copal is Mexican, sourced through artisan producers the owner of this store knows personally. Burned on lit charcoal, it gives off a heavier, earthier smoke than white copal โ a character Oaxacan and other Mesoamerican communities (Zapotec, Mixtec, and many others, not only Mexica) have long reserved for deeper cleansings and for protecting a space, alongside the everyday use in processions, home altars, and offerings the whole copal family shares. This one-kilogram bag comes as whole stone, unground โ break off a large piece for a slow burn or small shards for a quick one. Sized for anyone who goes through copal often: limpia practitioners, ritual-supply shops reselling by the portion, and community events where copal burns for hours. Copal accompanies ritual and tradition; it is not a substitute for medical or psychological care.
