When the bark of a Bursera tree is cut, the resin runs and hardens in the air into a drop — a “tear.” That’s the copal sold here: unground, unmolded, the piece exactly as the tree left it. It’s the oldest and least-processed form this resin — copalli in Nahuatl — has reached human hands in for more than three thousand years. This is the same copal that burned in temples, home altars, and processions across Mesoamerica before the Conquest, shared by the Mexica, Maya, Mixtec, Zapotec, and many other peoples, and still alive today in Day of the Dead offerings, limpias, temazcal ceremonies, and contemporary Indigenous practice. Ours is Mexican copal, sourced through artisan producers the owner knows personally, harvested by controlled bark cuts rather than felling the tree. The one-kilogram size is built for regular, high-volume use: temazcaleros sahuming before every session, ritual-supply shops reselling by the portion, or anyone assembling an offering that burns for hours. Break the tears large for a slow burn or small for a quicker one over lit charcoal. Copal accompanies ritual and tradition; it is not a substitute for medical or psychological care.
